The battle being waged inside of us is between opposing but not equal sides, the Spirit and the flesh. Ancient Christians taught that when we sow to the Spirit, we reap virtue, and when we sow to the flesh we reap vice. Vice is the disease that cripples a life of loving like God, and virtue is what enables it. The thing we so often fail to recognize, and is so incredibly vital, is that we all start following Jesus packed full of vice, resulting in an awkward duplicity that threatens to derail our journey before we even get started. What we need in the beginning is a way of following Christ that frees us to live in the tension, a way that shows us what it means to be at the same time both lost and found, broken and whole, dead and alive – in other words, a Christian beginning our journey with Jesus.
