"But in today's distorted condition of humanity, it is [our] basic desires that have been allowed to run a rebellious and harmful course, ultimately serving as the primary host of sin in our personalities."
– Dallas Willard
The arena of vice is our desires, those subtle undercurrents of human motivation, all of which were made good by God. One of the giants of early Christianity, St. Basil the Great wrote that ”Sin is the misuse of powers given us by God to do good.” Sin is not a thing, but the misuse of good things. To say it more exact, sin is the misuse of our good desires. The enemy preys on us by twisting, mangling, and splintering those desires, constantly tempting us to act in a way that perverts our desires, eventually enslaving us to a vice.
