The Antidote to Envy

The Antidote to Envy

When our desire for worth and honor is ordered rightly, it is transformed away from the vice of envy towards the virtue of kindness. Kindness is the quality of being friendly, generous, considerate, and merciful. Kindness stops the spread of evil. It breaks the cycle of hate and germinates a kind of hope within humanity. St. Paul tells us that kindness is a fruit of the Spirit, meaning God wants to grow it inside of us. At its core, kindness is how friendship starts. When the Christ life gets a hold of us and starts unwinding envy, we begin doing something odd, we enjoy regarding one another more important than ourselves (Philippians 2:3). Thus, kindness becomes the soil of all good and honest relationships, both with others and with God.
