Short-Circuiting Surrender

Some will say, ‘I’ve not had an awakening experience, a Damascus-road like encounter, I’m not even sure I’ve had a casual meeting with God. I’ve asked Him over-and-over to reveal himself to me. But I’ve never had an overwhelming experience of surrender or awakening.’ What is the motive that lurks behind these questions? When we ask for something like this are we sure we’re not subconsciously demanding God do all the heavy lifting? Are we not willing to surrender and follow Him, like Simon and Andrew, to rearrange our life around Him? Are we waiting for a divine flash before we embark? Are we willing to lay aside the idol of all of those sensational surrender stories and simply venture out into a life ordered around Jesus?
