When our desire to create or produce is ordered rightly it’s transformed away from sloth and toward the virtue of diligence. Diligence means we regularly put love and care into what we create or produce, whether that’s our work, our relationships, or our apprenticeship to Jesus. Diligence is derived from the Latin word diligere, which means to love. It reinforces our labor and creates a kind of effort that’s immersed in grace, meaning that God empowers our human endeavors. As the virtue of diligence takes root in our body, we come to see our whole vocation as a form of loving, we learn to enjoy and share our work without pride or modesty.
