Repetition and Progression
"The journey is both repetitious and progressive," wrote William Butler Yeats, "we go both round and upward." Our spiritual pilgrimage is a little like climbing a spiral staircase. We don't make our ascent by climbing in a single direction, we circle round and round as we scale higher and higher. This circling represents many things but my favorite is the back-and-forth rhythm of purification and illumination. In one moment we feel the uncomfortable, even painful, work of purification and refinement, and in the next we're experiencing the delightful, enlightening effect of illumination. Nothing is static in the way of Jesus, these holy repetitions create a Christlike progression over the long-haul of our lives that draw us closer to that one great hope in our hearts, to love like God loves.
