Training & Trying
I’ve said that we cannot become Christlike without training. That’s true. But of course, that doesn’t mean we stop trying to act Christlike until some date far in the future. It means that we must do both jobs at once: 1) the job of training with Jesus, so that our thoughts and feelings and actions become more like His, and 2) trying our best to make Christlike choices in the present moment even though we may feel at odds with our nature. Both jobs are hard and both demand grace. Yes, we’ll fail often. But the vital thing is to persist—and to dare to live like forgiven men and women as we do. We don’t have to worry—He will make us like Christ—but we must do our part, we must train, even try.
